Sneppen was the former president of SECEC in the years 1993 to 1995. Nationally he was the leading Orthopedic Surgeon of his generation, with profound influence on the orthopedic sub-specialization introduced in Denmark, during the 90s. Originally educated in Copenhagen with a consultant position at the Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen, he was appointed Professor in Aarhus in 1979. Already in 1980 he founded the Biomechanical Lab. Here many scientific papers and theses were performed with both national and international attention, and the department in Aarhus educated Orthopedic Surgeons that now holds leading positions in all parts of Denmark. He chaired the aggregation of 3 major orthopedic departments in Aarhus, strengthening both the department in Aarhus, but also danish orthopedic surgery nationally and internationally. In Aarhus he founded and initially chaired the section for shoulder and elbow surgery, were many Danish shoulder and elbow surgeons and international fellows had surgical training. He retired in 2005 at the age of 70.

Sneppen organized the Danish textbook ”Ortopædisk Kirurgi” in 1986 and has since then been used by Danish Medical Students and young doctors for their education in Orthopedic surgery. Currently the 9’th edition is being prepared with new editors.

Privately Sneppen was a discrete person, he had a gentle sense of humor, and was always ready with support and advice both for colleagues as well as for his patients.

Danish orthopedic surgery, SECEC and other international orthopedic societies as well as many individual surgeons in Denmark and Europe owes Otto Sneppen much credit for his efforts for orthopedic surgery and especially for surgery on the shoulder and the elbow.

Otto Sneppen is survived by his wife Louise.

We honor the memory of Otto Sneppen.
