Aim of Research and Development Committee

The Research and Development Committee supports the research components of the mission of the SECEC.

It aims to foster the scientific attitude of our members by awarding research prizes and grants.

Furthermore, the R&D committee wishes to provide a platform for sharing information tools (guide to making a survey and outcome measures) and to conduct surveys.

Specific Functions

  • Didier Patte Prize
This premier scientific award of the society aims to acknowledge an original and substantial body of scientific work of outstanding merit in the field of shoulder and elbow surgery. At least part of the work should not have been published before the submission deadline. The principal author should be under the age of 45.

  • Research Grant Awards
Each year the SECEC offers two research grants that are intended to promote and support either basic or clinical research related to shoulder and elbow pathology. The primary purpose of these grants is to foster projects that provide useful information and/or develop and provide methodological tools for the benefit of our society. The obtained knowledge will be at free disposal for SECEC members. Methodological and epidemiological projects will be favoured.

  • Best Paper Prize and Grammont Award
On the basis of abstracts submitted for the annual congress, the submissions with the highest scores from the reviewers overall and in each category are selected for additional review. The authors are requested to submit a full paper of their study. The best scoring full paper (Research question, M&M, Results, Discussion, Clinical Relevance) overall will be granted the SECEC Best Paper Prize, the best scoring Arthroplasty paper will be granted the Grammont Award. Both authors will be offered the opportunity to have their paper published (when accepted after review) in the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery with the respective Prize/Award as a prestigious label.

  • Outcome measures and evaluation
The Research and Development committee advises on the appropriate use of outcome measures and evaluation systems for the shoulder and elbow. It provides a platform on the SECEC website to easily find access to outcome measures used in shoulder and elbow research.

  • Surveys and multicentric studies
The R&D Committee has undertaken several surveys amongst its membership (use of outcome scores, attitudes towards rotator cuff tears, management of proximal humerus fractures) and fosters the distribution of surveys by members through the website.A member wishing to conduct a survey through the SECEC channel can submit a proposal to the R&D committee. After positive screening and review by the R&D committee members, the invitation and link to the survey can be distributed by mail and on the website. The website also offers a set of guidelines to compose a survey. The R&D Committee also offers a channel for collaboration in multicentric, epidemiological studies on more rare pathology.
